Have a Design No No?

While looking at all of the designer rooms in magazines, on websites or blogs do you take notice of the small details that make the room? These may seem insignificant when your are planning your space but they can give your room that polished look and you don't have to spend a lot of money. See the few tips below and save yourself from making a Design No No in your space.
  • Hang your art at the right level- We've all seen art that looks as if it is floating out on its own above a piece of furniture. It's best to separate furniture by no more than 10".
  • Don't match everything in your room- whether it be furniture pieces, matching fabrics or coordinated wallpapers - It gets boring.
  • Don't have too many small plants scattered around- make an impact with a few grouped together or use 1 large knock your socks off plant.
  • Be aware of your silk plants- don't let them become dust catchers! Personally, I like fresh flowers when in season so they are reasonably priced.
  • Be ruthless in editing accessories in the room- Make them count! You can always rotate them out.

It's Earth Day!!!!

Earth day is to inspire awareness and appreciation of God's wonderful creation called earth! Appreciation through the eyes of my lens:

There is also some of the most beautiful scenery of God's great earth set to music at worship.net. The video shows scenery from all over the world. It takes a few clicks to get there but it is worth every click. Once you get to the website - www.worship.net find the tab watch worship, then select worship media player- then select specials and last but not least select Nature of Worship.

Happy Weekend

This is a photo that I shot at a local park. A little lake covered with lilly pads. I am ready to go on another nature photo shoot! It's that time again-- Happy Weekend!

Beautiful Quiet Textures

This home has many beautiful, quiet textures which keeps the view clean and unobstructed and gives a feeling of relaxation. Just check out the black labs.

I am such a fan of kitchens without upper cabinets, the only problem is I like so many dishes that I just don't know if I could make do without the storage they provide.

What a fab ceiling! Such a strong statement in a simple way.

Here is a shot of the area at the end of the room. What a lovely place to work!

So many eye pleasing pieces in such a small space. But each piece gives your eye a place to land as you follow the ironwork up to the second floor and around to the window treatment.

Such a relaxing bathroom- Don't you just love the soaking tub? And I think the pedestal sink is terrific- so unique. This reminds me of a great quote I read, "Nobody wants to show up to a party in the same dress. That's the same reason interior design should be unique"--John Moinzad

Cozy Dining

I have always been tempted to use banquette seating in the dining area of my kitchen. It just seems so cozy and a great place to linger over the dinner table for great conversation. And to me this example is a conversation starter itself. Ooh la la! It looks so elegant and feminine. So many textures used in such a small space- velvet, metal, wood and stone - you know these are some of my favorite combinations. This room is designed by Jane Ellison.

The next example is a very modern banquette designed by Jonathan Clarke. This setting has a very masculine feel to me. I do like the use of the large mirror- it really elongates the space.

The next two photos are of the same area styled two ways- again by Jane Ellison. Which do you prefer? I myself find the second to be more appealing.

Apparently I am not the only one who is loving the cozy banquette. I found several others who have great posts with more beautiful examples. There are so many options- If you would like to see more, take a look at The Kitchen Designer, Mark Cutler or Patricia Gray's posts.

Fruits of Your Labor

With all of the talk on the television about the seemingly glum economy- Are you looking for something to snap you out of that train of thought? Color trends this spring are bright yellows and greens and a great way to bring those colors into your home without breaking the household budget is by displaying fruit. It usually more economical than flowers and has the added benefit of being good for you so it can become an ever changing work of art as your family enjoys the fruits of your labor.

Elizabowl

Sarah O'Brien, a Louisiana Design Student won 1st place at the International Housewares Association's annual student design competition! She designed a flexible fruit bowl mad of polypropylene pockets that expand and close to accommodate individual pieces of fruit which helps extend the life of the individual pieces of fruit by minimizing bruising and the transfer of ethylene gas that causes over-ripening. The shape of the over sized pockets resembles a collar worn during the Elizabethan period leading to the name Elizabowl. Check out this video-- I'm sure these will be a wonderful addition to everyone's kitchen in the near future!

Congratulations Sarah!!!

Spring Fling

Melissa at The Inspired Room is hosting a Spring Fling Fluffing Game and asks that if you have a spring vignette in your home or on your porch to please post. So Join in and and let the fluffing begin. Here is my front porch - I am beginning my fluff!

I thought I would add a little collage of pics that I have taken this spring- you may enlarge by clicking on the picture. Spring has been beautiful here!

Vignettes

Vignette- a small view that displays what's going on in a certain area.

There are many opportunities to personalize your home when creating vignettes that show your style. These can be easily and quickly changed by adding or subtracting pieces as your tastes or the seasons change. If you are like me, I like to change things up a bit just to give a fresh look to the space.

Changing accessories won't usually ruin your budgets and it is a lot easier than painting- which is another quick change solution for your space. Changing accessories doesn't necessarily mean buying everything new- but taking stock of what you have and see other possibilities for where they go rather than where they always go.

The best thing to do when changing out is to clear every surface. Then start replacing your pieces while avoiding repeating the same arrangements that you previously had. Think of your vignette as a canvas and you are trying to create the perfect still life. The idea is to have differing heights, textures, colors and widths, but also have a theme that draws the objects together. It's best to overlap some so that they are slightly hidden and others are more prominent. Don't have too many focal points - so as not to confuse the eye.

Now have fun! Step back and look art the work of art you have created in your vignette.

No matter what your style, you can create an interesting vignette. There are so many wonderful bloggers in blogland with differing styles I thought I would feature a few:

This example is from Cote de Texas, Do you see the theme tying the table together? Globes of different sizes and the collection of books. Joni states that she removes the suzani in the summer which definitely changes the look at no cost.

This vignette is from The Inspired Room. Notice the varying heights of mirrors and the use of the color red.

This beautiful setting from KatieDid is so fresh for spring. Did you notice the layering on the mirror and the varying heights of the objects. Using books as a riser is a smart and inexpensive choice.

Kari and Kijsa created a wonderful vignette overlapping plates and chargers.

Just Imagine with a perfectly modern still life.

Now stay calm and start re-creating vignettes for a fresh new look for spring in your home!
