Paperwhites Please

While perusing one of my favorite blogs - Dreamy Whites - I was inspired to try forcing Paperwhites. Maria said they are one of the easiest bulbs to grow so I thought I would give it a try - of course with a modern transitional flair.

First, I gathered the materials as instructed - Bulbs, Pebbles and 3 Dishes.

Next I placed the pebbles in the dishes.

To mimic the straight lines of the dish, I placed the bulbs in straight lines. Since there is no worry of overcrowding I placed 3 rows of 3. Hoping that the result will be splendid!

Ready for my 2nd dish...

Now - all three are complete. You can see I only placed 3 in the center dish, I thought if all goes well I may add some Christmas baubles later.

The water pitcher is ready...

Adding water just to the bottom of the bulbs.

as I.do.not.want.root.rot!

Now, we wait - 4-6 weeks with fingers crossed - Paperwhites please!?!

The package says- Guaranteed to Grow.... I'll post pics later if all goes well.

Origami Tulips for my Valentine

Tulips are one of my favorite flowers, but the down side is they don't seem to last long enough for me! So when I saw this video on ehow providing instructions for creating origami tulips, I just had to give it a try.

It was so easy! After creating a few flowers I decided that I just had to create a Valentine arrangement. So, I wrapped florist wire with strips of fabric and then inserted them into this beautiful black glass vase with some cut branches from the yard. To add another dimension, I finished it off with a few pieces of white quilling paper.

If you've ever thought you might want to try your hand at origami - this flower is a very easy one to begin with! If you decide to try, please share your pics!

The Surrey in New York was rejuvenated by Rottet Studio and has been named one of the best of the year by Interior Design Magazine. A wonderful example of using oversized artwork!

In the lobby there is a beautiful textural piece - notice how low it is hung in relationship with the furniture grouping.

Something unexpected! - an oversized photo of Kate Moss.

A little whimsy perhaps? A curvy Victorian sofa in contrast to the straight lined furniture in the room.

And do I spy a log stool from The Phillips Collection? Hmm, it certainly looks like it!

Do you love fresh flowers? I find them to be a breath of fresh air especially when the weather is drab outside. Using an abundance of one flower is my favorite arrangement.... Could it be because it is the easiest to pull off? Here is a simple elegant arrangement using white chrysanthemums.

What is your favorite winter white floral? Tulip, paperwhite, amaryllis, hyacinth?

Don't forget that white signifies a fresh start --- a New Year is just a few days away!

I attended Lavish this weekend in Atlanta and it was simply amazing! The atmosphere was spectacular as we were at The Mansion on Peachtree and it was so lovely.

I am delighted to share photos that one of our new happy dwelling friends shared with us! Robin Plume purchased the Ruffle Cap Carved Mushrooms for her Thanksgiving table and I must say- she set a beautiful table.

I find the lighting fixture just lovely!

Natural elements, wood and silver are always a winning combination!

Festival of Trees

I attended the lovely Festival of Trees this afternoon and saw this lovely tablescape entitled Silver Spoon. Of course I was attracted to it because of the mix of natural elements and the unexpected use of blue. Mercury glass add just the right sparkle. I think this could be interpreted for use on a side table also so as not to impede the flow of conversation at the table.

Think all tiles have to be square? Think again.... Lovely hand made tiles from Stoneleaf Tile and Mosaic -
Fabulous Hercules Moth Tile created in high fired stoneware. Each butterly and moth is hand painted paying very close attention to detail. This tile is functional, and strong enough to use on floor, wall, back splash, hearth, pool or in large mosaic work. It can stand alone as a unique focal point or it can be grouted in among stoneware leaves or commercial sliced pebble tile.

Halloween Weekend Project

Are you looking for an easy, decorating idea for Halloween? We chose a theme of birds and trees and gave it a decidedly modern feel.

Happy Halloween!

Details include crystal bobeches to give a fanciful nod to the past.

A simple detail of rust colored ribbon tied around the crows neck.

The plates are merely created with stickers created on the computer, then glazed to give them a shine.

Unfinished wood plaques were used- purchased with the ribbon already attached. The edges were painted with black and the ribbons were smudged so they weren't so crispy white. Scrapbook paper was then attached and layered with a sticker created on the computer.

You'll never have to worry about blocking the flow of conversation at the dinner table when using little groupings of small bouquets for centerpieces. Here cordial or vodka glasses were grouped together and filled with beautiful flowers to complement the fall color scheme and placed at each setting.

If using this idea at a dinner party, it's a nice idea to use them as party favors for your guests.

Want to encourage your guests to linger a little longer and enjoy coffee, cocktails & conversation with you in a space that by every one's measure is a roaring success? We are pleased to share with you 6 tips from some of our favorite designers. They will show us how to give our guests pause as we accomplish this most inviting feat.

Designer Kenneth Brown believes that soft textures, lamp lighting, a warm color palette and the sound of laughter help create an environment that says "Welcome".

"In order to create a space that is both inviting to the heart and pleasing to the eye - it is important to not overlook your ceilings," says designer Samantha Sirzyk. "So often the focus of an interior is placed on furniture arrangements and accessories, all the things that you see in front of you, when really it is what comes from above that can take your space from ordinary to extraordinary. Pay attention to the lighting in your space - both the type of fixtures (recessed, surface mounted, torchiere, etc.) and the types of lamps (incandescent, fluorescent, halogen, etc.)- and don't forget about the endless possibilities with ceilings treatments (a simple bead board might just do the trick)."

For designer Robin Baron, "Flexibility is the name of the game! Create a seating area in your family or living room that's comfortable and multi-purpose. Designer Nicole Sassaman says, "The family room is a stylish, modern, and yet very comfortable space to have your morning coffee in or even your martinis in the evenings. I provided lots of fun seating, but one of the favorites is right on the floor on top of the cozy shag carpeting. The warm colors on the walls and the unique fireplace create a great ambiance to hang out and relax in. The crashing sound of the waves hitting the sand doesn't hurt either!"

Designer Mally Skok shares "I think creating a comfortable environment is all about seating. I love to put chairs in passages, in bathrooms, a bench in a window with a lovely view. It visually says to you and your friends - make yourself comfortable, stay a while, or put down that heavy package here. Chairs, sofas and benches in well thought out an unusual places tell your guests that there is plenty of space for them to drop in and stay for a while. It really doesn't matter if they ever sit in that spot or not, it still sends a lovely message."

I don't know about you but I sometimes feel a little melancholy as I put away the Christmas decorations. It may be because they represent special times with friends and family - all the joy and laughter that comes so easily at this time of year. I've decided that I am resolving myself to enjoy it this year!

So as I put away the last twinkling lights....

My hope in the following year is make a conscious decision to enjoy and take time to celebrate the good things in this world and to live with a passion everyday! And I wish the same for you!

There are so many wonderful blogs and I am looking forward to a wonderful new year filled with inspiring ideas for us all - my fellow bloggers!

The Christmas Halo

Is Christmas dinner at your place this year? Are you worried about impressing your guests with your cooking skills - or lack thereof?

Well, it turns out that a food psychologist at the University of Illinois, Brian Wansink, has found that the way people perceive their dinner has less to do with what's on their plate than what's in their heads. Tell me more you say?

Restaurants pay lots of attention to their decor and lighting, the wait staff, menus and even the names and descriptions of their dishes --- Why you ask? To create the belief that the chef will be taking similar pains over your meal. And it works - if the food is half decent.

So how can you ensure your guests love your meal? Try these few tips-- During the conversation talk up your ingredients - maybe mention that you bought your cranberries at the organic farmer's market. Or that you can't wait for them to taste the fresh juicy pears which are at their peak at this time of year.

Props can also help create the halo effect. When guests wander into the kitchen, why not fiddle with your most complicated piece of equipment? For me, that could be my food processor - wink wink. What about leaving a melon baller on the counter -- wicked looking!

What studies have shown is that making people pay close attention to their food - makes it taste better.

If you try any of these tips, be warned--- You may be asked to host the meal again next year!

5 Easy Halloween Decorating Tips Shown:
1-Re-use picture frames- (we used broken ones but you could repurpose some in your home just for the season)
2-Create bewitching artwork on your computer- How easy is that?
3-Enlist family or friends who are artistic to create original inexpensive works of art- All you have to do is ask nicely - Artists love to be appreciated.
4-Use some of your own everyday decorative objects in "spooky" ways - No one else will have the same decor.
5-Mix it up- use leftover fabrics to create a one of a kind table topper
Are you ready for Halloween? We are! After pulling everything out of the attic and party closet, we started the actual process of decorating in anticipation of hosting our family and friends for the evening. Halloween is such a great holiday because in a sense, you are producing theater! You get to create the setting and provide the cast of characters against a backdrop that is only limited by your imagination. We are creating our setting without spending tons of money by re purposing things we already have or are able to borrow. We are giving new meaning to transitional decor. Transitioning everyday objects into objects of spectacular spookiness.

The entry table is set with a candelabra, a "dead" rose and the candy bowl of course. The rose is placed in a vase left behind by my daughter's move and is covered in spider webs. The table cover is actually 2 pieces of fabric from the party closet and 1 black scarf that was bought a few Halloweens ago for the mantel. Thoughts on the candy bowl... I used a crystal bowl from the china cabinet. Unexpected touch, don't you think? And hey, it was just sitting there so I decided to treat the guests to a lovely thing and enjoy something that I already have.

Boo!
I bet I scared you. Ha Ha!

For the mantel, I asked my daughter to create "artwork" on black fiber board purchased at the craft store and painted with white marker. Old broken frames were used for the photoshop artwork printed out on the computer. And the little glass vase is filled with rocks from the garden and purchased metallic "flowers".

Making The Most of Your Living Room

Your room should have a focal point and fireplaces are the perfect natural candidate as they bring a feeling of comfort to your room, but if there is no fireplace you will need to create your centerpiece. You might hang an oversized piece of art or feature a beautiful piece of furniture. Color can be a simple solution to creating your focal point, whether it is a wall color or one just one color used as an accent around the room.

When considering lighting for your room, you’ll need to accommodate activities such as reading as well as resting activities.

Seating selection should be appropriate for everyone in your family; comfort is much more important to consider than style. Consider seating that makes everyone feel relaxed and at ease. Don’t forget to mix up the textures when you select your textiles.

Experiment with the furniture layout- If space allows, consider introducing a second seating area. A great solution to connect different areas of the room is to use backless seating such as a chaise or bench to allow viewing from one part of the room to the other.

Careful consideration should be given to storage. Be sure to plan for housing your media equipment. Not to say that the television has to be hidden, but do hide the wires! Nothing is less relaxing than mess, clutter and exposed wiring.

Is your design easy to maintain? Remember that your room is for living and not for show. Let your hair down and enjoy living your everyday life.

Commit the room’s design to paper, even if your budget doesn’t allow completion of the project all at once. You will benefit from the vision as you make future purchases.

Autumn Is A Second Spring...

Fall is on its way and here in Louisiana we are just beginning to feel that it is right around the corner. So to emphasize that autumn feeling in my home, I brought in a few things from the outdoors. On the mantel, a few cut branches from the tree in the front yard, a few pinecones and some artwork are all that are needed. The black and white photo was shot by my daughter and to me it represents happy feet- ready to rejoice in the clear, cooler days ahead.

You can see that the leaves are just beginning to show signs that a new season is approaching. I can't wait for more of the russet coloring to appear! I read one time that if you examine a fallen leaf, you'll see a tiny picture of the tree that produced it. The pattern of a tree's branches closely mimics the veins in its leaves.

The unassuming pinecone is usually a supporting player, but this time it is assigned a feature role.

Keeping it simple in the dining area, I used recycled glass and placed it down the center of the table filled with treasures from my stash of outdoor beauties- some collected on walks in the woods down by the lake.

Inspiration is waiting just outside the front door among the brilliant leaves and crackling twigs.

And I'm certainly looking forward to pumpkins, the falling leaves of red and gold, and a delicious bowl of gumbo on a cool autumn evening. How about you?
